CVD and Collaborators Launch Study to Better Understand Immune Responses to Lassa Fever
The University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD), has announced the launch of a research study to understand how Lassa fever survivors fight and overcome Lassa virus infection. The study, titled “Identification and Immunologic Characterization of Adult Lassa Fever Survivors in Nigeria”, is a collaboration between CVD, The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) International Research Center of Excellence (IRCE), and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi State.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Forms Global Health Alliance
Global health research in U.S. academic medical centers is facing dire threats with proposed cuts to the federal budget that would reduce funding for global health programs by 62 percent, from $10 billion to $3.8 billion. Cuts include reducing funding for the President’s Malaria Initiative by nearly 45 percent, zeroing out U.S. funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which received $300 million this year, as well as discontinuing $1.7 billion annually for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS.

University of Maryland School of Medicine Receives One of the Largest Gifts in its History to Establish Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine
With an urgent mission to address the alarming rise in drug overdose deaths, the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) has announced plans to open the new Kahlert Institute for Addiction Medicine. It will be funded with a $10 million gift from the Maryland-based Kahlert Foundation with an additional $10 million provided by the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and $5 million from UMSOM to renovate research facilities on campus. UMSOM has committed to raise an additional $5 million in philanthropic donations for the Kahlert Institute.

NCI Grants Awarded to IHV to Prevent Cancer and Improve Screening in Sub-Saharan Africa
Institute of Human Virology (IHV) researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have received two five-year awards from the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) for a total of $7.5 million. One award aims to reduce the incidence of lung cancer and other cancers associated with using tobacco in Botswana. The other is focusing on improving screening and treatment of anal precancer in Nigeria. Both grants will make use of existing HIV treatment and prevention infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries to reach people living with HIV who are most at risk for these particular types of cancers.
