Clinical Research Unit
The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at the IHV supports clinical trials for complex infectious diseases. The research unit focuses on treating and preventing viral diseases, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV, and emerging viruses like SARS-CoV-2, but also completes research on healthy volunteers.

Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center
At the Baltimore Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Medical Center, under the leadership of Todd Gleeson, MD, veterans have access to a wide portfolio of clinical research, including investigational COVID-19 vaccine studies, infection control and prevention quality improvement projects, natural history studies of antiviral therapies, interventions to mitigate the elevated risks of cardiovascular disease and cancer in chronic HIV and viral hepatitis infections, and implementation studies of new strategies to expand HIV outreach, testing, and prevention efforts.
Global Health
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an extensive and growing international program predominantly based within IHV’s Center for International Health, Education, and Biosecurity (Ciheb), which is focused on cutting-edge HIV research.
Our teams collaborate with local faculty and investigators to carry out and support clinical, epidemiological, and implementation science studies that advance the understanding of HIV prevention, care, and treatment, particularly around key and vulnerable populations, such as adolescent and young women. As people live longer with HIV nowadays, Ciheb is studying disease likely to accompany HIV, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer.

Antimicrobial Stewardship
This program is a multidisciplinary effort to investigate and optimize antibiotic prescriptions with the goal to improve patient outcomes both in and out of the hospital and limit unintended consequences, such as C. difficile infection and antibiotic resistance.
